1km Of Telephone Cable Stolen From Roadside

Telephone cable which supplies services to 800 homes in Berwick has been pulled from the ground by a mystery theif.

Workers discovered the cable had been cut and the 1km length had been yanked out of the ground when they arrived for work at 4am on Wednesday. The theft happened on the B2108 between the Drusilla’s roundabout and Alfriston between 1am and 2am on October 28th.

Police believe vehicle may have been used to pull it out of the ground and then the same or a waiting vehicle used to transport it. The estimated cost to repair and replace the cable is £45,000.

PC Thomas Stallard said: “Police are seeking any witnesses who may have seen anyone prior to this time or during the hours stated, even if they looked to be official work people on the site. We would urge anyone with information to please contact us on 0845 60 70 999, quoting serial 204 of 28/10.”
