A temporary ice rink in the grounds of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion is earmarked for approval.
Planning officers are recommending councillors agree the scheme at a planning meeting on November 4.
If agreed organisers hope the temporary rink would be ready during November and available until late January, when it would be dismantled.
The proposal is for a rink of real ice 20m by 35m, capable of accommodating up to 240 skaters. It would have eight 14-ft lighting towers, enabling night-time use. There would also be a café, offering seating for up to 200 people with good views of the skating.
Temporary buildings would also house toilets, first-aid, cloakroom and kitchens.
All facilities would be on the east side of the building on the expanse of grass adjoining the Old Steine. Buildings will be designed to compliment the Royal Pavilion and avoid obscuring the landmark.
Council leader Mary Mears said: “The planning committee will make up its own mind. But if it goes ahead I’m sure it would be popular. The council is generally keen to back projects which bring residents and visitors into the city centre and boost the local economy.
“It could be an amazing sight. The Pavilion has been compared to the Kremlin. So people ice skating in front of it could provide a Moscow-on-Sea atmosphere and give us our own Russian-style winter palace.”
