Beware Of Overcharging Taxis in Sussex

ROTHER residents are being asked to report rogue taxi drivers.

A small number of complaints have been received by Rother District Council to say a minority of drivers have not been setting their meters correctly at the start of journeys.

The Council and the Rother Taxi Drivers’ Association are determined to stamp out the practice.

When starting a journey in a hackney carriage the meter should always be set to £2.50 during the daytime Monday to Saturday. It must also display a current fare card, showing charges for the day and time.

Both the Council and the association have stressed that it is only a few drivers believed to be guilty of this tactic.

Steve Gaines, secretary of the Rother Taxi Drivers’ Association, said: “In my experience the vast majority of taxi drivers are decent and honest.

“Any initiative to increase public awareness of this activity is to be applauded. I expect the Council to vigorously pursue and reprimand any driver caught engaging in this activity.”
